Supporting the oral transmission of an ancestral heritage

The Huron-Wendat Museum fulfills an important mission in the Quebec City region. It transmits the culture and knowledge of the Huron-Wendat nation through objects and stories. The health context in which the exhibition The Canoe, Bearer of Tradition was created made the use of interactive devices impossible. How, in this case, could we convey a tradition that was largely oral to visitors who came for an immersive experience?

Experiencing culture through interactive museology

Using MySmartJourney technology, the Huron-Wendat Museum was able to integrate quizzes, animations and additional information into its exhibition. Visitors had their curiosity titillated by intriguing questions, learned a few words in Wendat, and learned about the place of the canoe in Huron-Wendat culture, right on their own smartphones.

The various cultures of the First Nations are mainly oral, and are passed down from generation to generation through words, stories and legends. So, each visitor had the opportunity to hear the language and listen to testimonies, without pressing any button other than that of their personal device. A safe, immersive experience!
