Creating a cultural project that directly benefits residents
The Saco River is at the heart of the local identity: it has driven the city’s economy, shaped its culture, and continues to be a place for recreation and community life.
But beyond its heritage and ecological value, Saco Main Street wanted the digital outreach project to have a tangible social impact on the community. The idea was to make the interactive walk a tool for cultural enrichment, education, and community solidarity.
A free, interactive, and community-focused tour
With MySmartJourney, Saco Main Street has created a 30- to 45-minute self-guided digital tour, accessible via QR codes along the river. Visitors can explore historical audio recordings and photos, local anecdotes and testimonials, as well as interactive segments on wildlife, flora, and conservation efforts.
But the project’s most significant innovation lies in its humanitarian aspect: the tour is free for everyone. Visitors are invited to make a voluntary donation to the Saco Main Street association. These donations directly fund science and nature camps for local youth. In this way, every visitor becomes an active participant in this community project, supporting the transmission of knowledge and the education of future generations.
