Highlighting Figures Who Have Shaped First Nations History
How can we tell the stories of figures who advanced their nation’s cause without limiting ourselves to a few lines on a sign? This is the question the Huron-Wendat Museum in Wendake sought to answer by choosing to highlight two prominent figures of the Wendat Nation right where they once lived.
For Canadian Heritage Day, the museum unveiled a new project in the gardens of the Tsawenhohi House: Marguerite Vincent Lawinonkié and Nicolas Vincent Tsawenhohi, two historically significant figures for First Nations. Nicolas Vincent Tsawenhohi, an expert on Wendat territory, was also a skilled diplomat: he defended his nation’s rights before the British Crown. Marguerite Vincent, for her part, was a renowned artisan who contributed to the economic revitalization of Wendake.

In collaboration with MySmartJourney, the museum has developed digital content dedicated to these two Indigenous figures. Simply scan the QR code displayed on-site with your phone to access a wealth of additional information—historical facts, anecdotes, and fun content—available directly on the back of the panels featuring Marguerite Vincent and Nicolas Vincent Tsawenhohi.
This project is part of a broader collaboration between the museum and MySmartJourney, which has already made it possible to digitize other exhibitions, including The Canoe: Bearer of Traditions. Many projects aimed at promoting Indigenous heritage originate from a grant application: for organizations undertaking this type of initiative, this approach demonstrates a concrete way to make First Nations history visible on the ground—without relying solely on a guide—while respecting the ways in which these cultures pass down their history.
